| From mountains to beaches, Languedoc Roussillon is a region of wonderful variety. A place to relax and soak up the sun. Located alongside the Mediterranean Sea close to the border of Southern France and Spain it is a wild and magical country where nature is untouched since Roman times and where Hannibal once passed with his mighty armies. It is an area of sleepy, medieval villages, vineyards and stunning scenery with the ever present smell of wild lavender and rosemary.
The region offers miles of clean, uncrowded beaches with warm seas, excellent skiing and other recreational activities, a richly diverse culture, quiet roads and a climate that boasts 300 days of sunshine per year, the highest annual average in France.
Historic cities, Cathar Castles and Roman remains are scattered around the region and the area reads like a wine list from a top restaurant with Fitou, Corbieres, Cotes du Roussillon and Muscat all made on the doorstep. It is a land of contrasts from the gentle, sandy coastline stretching from the Pyrenees to the Rhone mouth backed by a rugged interior where the Cathars took refuge.
Perpignan is a bustling, lively town with Spanish influences and strong Catalan traditions whereas Roman Narbonne retains a dignified French atmosphere with its delightful canal, interesting shops and lively markets.
The area upon which we focus, the Aude and Pyreneees- Orientales departments is particularly well served by Four international airports- Perpignan, Girona, Carcassonne and Montpellier so getting here couldn't be easier. The super fast TGV rail service which whisks you from the Med to Paris in under four hours is scheduled to extend as far as Barcelona and Madrid within a few short years.
